Chase Hawk Cowboys Draw Their Rides

BILLINGS -

The 19th Annual Chase Hawks Rough Stock rodeo kicks off at MetraPark on Saturday. But have you ever wondered how those cowboys get paired with their rides?

Those broncs and bulls you see the cowboys riding at the rodeo aren't just paired up by chance.

"This is our 19th Annual Stock Draw Breakfast and half of the equation is the cowboy, the other half of the equation is the stock that they are going to be riding tonight," said John Roberts, President of the Chase Hawks Memorial Association.

Each cowboy made their way to the front of the room where they would participate in a blind draw to see which animal they'll hopefully buck their way to the winning circle with.

"I got Thunder Monkey of Sankies. That's a really good horse. I've always wanted to get on him. They've won Chase Hawks on him I think once or twice. He goes to national finals rodeo every year. He's kind of one of the ones to have," said Caleb Bennett, one of the riders in Saturday's rodeo.

And like Bennett, the caliber of riders at Chase Hawks is always the best.

"Cowboys come for this event really from all over the U.S. and Canada. It's an invitation only rodeo. So what we do, is we set fairly high standards. We're looking for the world champions, we're looking for high ranking cowboys to come to our event," said Roberts.

But it's not all about the eight-second ride, proceeds from the Chase Hawks Rodeo go toward helping families in crisis.

"I've always, always, have made sure I come back. Just the people up here are awesome and the organization and the whole reason behind this rodeo is just phenomenal. And the time of the year it is, Christmas, you know and giving and being around friends and family like this; it's just warming and really heart touching this time of the year," said Bennett.

Saturday's Chase Hawks Rough Stock Rodeo begins at 7:00 PM at MetraPark.
