Judge Says He Should Be Censured Not Removed

BILLINGS -

The judge who sentenced a high school teacher to 30 days for rape says he should be censured but not removed from the bench.

District Judge G. Todd Baugh says his comments violated judicial rules when he said the 14-year-old rape victim appeared older than her true age.

The judge also says he was told by a member of the state judicial ethics panel Baugh would be recommended for censure.

Those proceedings are confidential and the recommendation has not been confirmed.

In August, Judge Baugh sentenced former Senior high teacher Stacey Rambold to 30 days in prison for raping a student, who later committed suicide.

Last Friday, the Attorney General filed an appeal with the state supreme court to throw out what he calls an illegal sentence.
