Elder Grove Plans to Expand in Spring

BILLINGS -

It's been one year since a $5 million bond passed for Elder Grove School. Now they're looking forward to starting the expansion this spring.

At Elder Grove School space is limited, and students are ready to have a little extra room.

Elder Grove Principal, Nathan Schmitz said, "When we get to the point of having this completed we'll have eight brand new classrooms. We'll have a dedicated music space, and then because we're getting a new library, and computer lab our existing library and computer lab are being converted into 2 new classrooms."

Schmitz said they're going to add large windows for natural light.

"And as the edition of building two expands to the West, it's going to allow us to take building three down," said Schmitz.

The demolishing phase won't start until June 7th, the day after the last day of school.

Part of the new construction involves an indoor walkway that connects building one and two together. For the first time in 30 years they're able to maintain kindergarten through fifth grade students in one building.

"And that will be project number one is to over the summer have that walk way as priority to get done and at of the way before students come back at the end of august," Schmitz said.

One 2nd grade teacher says they cut her classroom in half to share with another teacher.

Elder Grove Teacher, Jackie Clement said, "I'm very excited and think we'll be in our classrooms one more year (the second grade will) because there's other classes that are going to go in the new part of the building before we do."

Schmitz said they have the carpet and colors picked out for the new building, and will meet with the design team tomorrow to go over the sketches, price, and budget.
