Organization Reaches Out to the Homeless

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

It's National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, and one local group put on a social gathering at the Rescue Mission.

Americorps Vista had ice cream and games for people to connect with the homeless community.

Americorps Vista volunteer, Kalyn Yasutake, said the goal is to break down the image of homelessness, and show people the homeless population is an actual problem in the community.

Yasutake also said they put this on to raise awareness, and to create support in the community, and create a bond between the community and the less fortunate.

"So we picked ice cream and games, because they're things that everyone likes. Everyone enjoys it, and it really creates an environment where it's safe and welcoming and allows people to have something to socialize over," said Yasutake.

Yasutake said her favorite part about this is giving back.
