Deer Rutting Season

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Local hunters report the annual deer-rutting season is starting. Experts say during the mating season deer are likely to be more aggressive.

It starts the second week of November, and it lasts for three weeks.

At one of the busiest hunting check stations in the area near Lavina, Wildlife Biologist, Ashley Beyer, said she has seen about 700 people so far this year.

She said she expects that number to increase to about one thousand by the end of the season.

"This year I've had a lot of mule deer. Not as many white tailed, just cause our numbers are so down. Elk has been hit and miss. Some weekends it's been good, and others it's been pretty normal, but mule deer probably mostly," said Beyer.

Beyer said after hunting an animal, stopping at the check-in stations is mandatory.

It's a way of keeping track of the wildlife population, and it's used to adjust licenses in the coming years.
