Report on Safety and Crime on Reservations

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

A commission formed to combat crime on American Indian reservations released a report on Tuesday.

The Indian Law and Order Commission traveled around the country to hear from tribal leaders about crime and addressing gaps in public safety.

The report comes out a day before the White House Tribal Nations Conference in Washington.

The commission chair says native communities are often more dangerous than the rest of the country and that outdated federal laws and policies are to blame.

The panel recommends giving tribes more control over crimes on their land.
