Women Donates Stem Cells to Self

When you think of a bone marrow transplant, many think of the procedure requiring a donor. At Billings Clinic, doctors can perform that transplant without the help from a donor, and the patient can be their own donor.

It's called an autologous bone marrow transplant.

Jessica Francischetti was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma one year ago. She had her stem cells removed prior to undergoing high dose chemotherapy. Those stem cells were then put back into her body, allowing her to donate to herself. The procedure allowed Jessica to be in the comfort of her home during the lengthy process.

"Knowing I'm in remission now is just a huge relief. Just a huge relief. I'll have to go back for testing and scans from time to time to make sure it stays that way. But yeah, like I said, it's just an amazing feeling to know that it's gone. It's just gone," says Francischetti.
