Volunteers Help Keep Billings Drug Free

The Billings Police Department teamed up with the Elks Lodge to stop people from abusing prescription drugs.

The prescription drug take back, encourages people to dispose of their old medications. Montana State University Billings volunteers also joined in the effort.

Students say it's important to maintain a safe and healthy community. "It's something that most people don't see as a problem in Billings or other cities. A lot of young people will get involved in it because it's so easy to get a hold of them from grandparents or older people, and the extremes that people will go to, to get their hands on it," said MSU-B student volunteer, Naomi Yakawich.

Organizers say after the drugs are collected, medications are taken to an incinerator where they are melted down and disposed.

    All 24 warning sirens in Yellowstone County are working properly according to the county's Department of Emergency Services. The sirens were tested last night for about a minute as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.
