Local Teacher Receives National Award

Posted: Updated:

The VFW is handing out its National Teacher of the Year award to a Billings Man. Hunter Jones of Will James Middle School beat out teachers from all of Montana to win the state award last fall. Then he beat out teachers across the country to win the national award.

The award is in recognition of his work over the last decade to support active duty troops and veterans, much of which was done in the classroom. Jones is the first teacher from Billings to win the award.

"It's so wonderful to see teachers like Hunter who go the extra mile, who...is passionate about teaching, and teaching positive," says Deanna Avent of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1634. Mr. Jones says, "To get an award from the VFW, to me personally, is probably the biggest honor I could ever have."

Jones and Will James Middle School each received $1,000 checks from the VFW. Jones and his wife will go to St. Louis in July to be formally recognized.
