Red Ribbon Week Teaches Children About Tobacco

BILLINGS -

Orchard Elementary School students are learning about the dangers of smoking for Red Ribbon Week, a drug prevention campaign.

Statistics indicate more than 1,400 Montanans die each year from tobacco use. Riverstone Health's prevention health specialists say it's important to reach children as early as possible because nine out of 10 people who smoke say they started before they were 18. The specialists grossed out kids with the facts of smoking.

"There's over four thousand chemicals in cigarettes and so it's kind of interesting to get a reaction when you show them some of the different chemicals found in cigarette smoke," said Nathan Stahley, prevention health specialist.

"There was one that they said it was animal pee and that's gross," said Jay Martin, a fifth grader, after the session.

Prevention health specialists talked to the students about the different chemicals found in cigarettes, like ammonia from bathroom cleaners and acetone from nail polish remover.
