Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

There's a stigma attached to domestic violence victims that often prevent victims from coming forward. October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month strives to change that.

Jamie Rindahl was once a domestic abuse victim. After finding the strength to speak up, she is now a survivor, and founder of DVAAS, Domestic Violence Abuse Awareness Society.

"A victim, I think, is somebody that continues to go back, that stays in that mind frame. A survivor is somebody that chooses to live their life in a different way," says Rindahl.

Every nine seconds, a women is assaulted or beaten in the U.S. That's why it's important to continue to raise awareness about Domestic Violence.

"Domestic violence is very serious because it does remain silent. People are not compelled to tell people that need to know about it to get the help that they need," says Rindahl.

The YWCA is a local shelter that helps nearly 700 women a year who suffer from abuse.

Rindahl says "a lot of times, people think that their friends are going to judge them, that family members are going to judge. I think they're harder on themselves by judging themselves."

Recognizing the signs and lending a helping hand could save a life.

"You'll see a lot more depression, maybe not wanting to go out, maybe canceling plans with friends. And also, you can see the scratches and bruises," says Rindahl. "With the right support in place, things get a little bit better every day."

Encourage help through organizations YWCA and don't let the stigma affect your judgement.

DVAAS and the Zonta Club of Billings are making blankets for domestic violence victims. It's Saturday, October 26th at 11 AM at the MSU-Billings Student Union Building.
