Veterans on 7th Flight Return Home

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

84 World War Two veterans are back in Montana after spending two days in Washington, D.C. With that flight the Big Sky Honor Flight has sent over 600 World War Two veterans to D.C. to see their memorial, but this trip was a little different.

At the FDR Memorial volunteers removed the police barricade along the road. At the Lincoln Memorial barricades prevented visitors from going up the final few sets of stairs to see the statue of Abraham Lincoln, well most visitors.

"I was looking kinda longing at that blank wall and a couple of ex marines came up and said would you like to go up there," says A.L. Frederick of Billings. Frederick is named after Abraham Lincoln. "That had a special place, and I did want to see that memorial," says A.L. The marines told him they'd help him and approached park service employees.

"We're taking this man up if you arrest anyone arrest us, let him go" They did and for A.L. it was the highlight of the trip.

A special permit opened the barricades at the World War Two Memorial, but for organizers the entire trip presented unique challenges. Bill Kennedy, the Big Sky Honor Flight Vice President says, "Bathroom breaks, that's a big piece of this is you have to find out where to schedule and get things going." Kennedy says while the challenges stand out the most on this trip it doesn't compare to what many of the 84 World War II veterans experienced during the war.
