Farm Bill Expires With Little Notice

BILLINGS -

Lost in the fight over Obamacare and the government shut down is the farm bill. It expired on Tuesday.

Dozen of programs run by the Agriculture Department ended without Congress finalizing a new farm bill or even an extension. Now, some programs remain in place such as food stamps, subsidy payments and crop insurance.

But if a new bill is not passed by the end of the year, those subsidies start to go away and you could see a spike in prices for things such as milk.

The White House and the Senate already stated they did not want an extension of the farm bill but a new one.

It's unlikely to happen while Congress squabbles over the budget.
