Sugar Beets Prices Drop

BILLINGS -

Agriculture plays a key role in not only Montana's economy, but also nation wide. For the first time in years, the price for sugar beet crops has dropped significantly.

According to the Montana State University Professor of Agricultural Marketing, the price change is due to an oversupply, which in turn, drives prices down.

"It always comes down to demand and supply conditions. And the demand for sugar is relatively steady. It doesn't change a great deal. So primarily, it's what happens on the production side, world wide and within the U.S. that determines what these world wide sugar prices are and the U.S. sugar prices," says Gary Brester.

Brester says sugar adds millions of dollars to the Montana economy every year.
