Black-Footed Ferrets to be Released on Montana Reservation

Posted: Updated:

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - Officials plan to release 30 endangered black-footed ferrets at Montana's Fort Belknap Reservation next month.

Fort Belknap Fish and Wildlife says the ferrets will be released into 1,000 acres of active prairie dog towns on Oct. 3rd.

Officials are trying to bolster populations, but say the state's last surviving population of ferrets at the UL Bend National Wildlife Refuge has fallen to a handful of animals.

The effort is part of a bigger plan to restore ferrets across the West.

The reintroduction at Fort Belknap is being made by the Assiniboine and Gros Ventres tribes, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, World Wildlife Fund, Defenders of Wildlife and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
