Zootoberfest Brings German Festivities

BILLINGS, Mont. -

Zootoberfest brought German music bands and games to ZooMontana.

The all-day event featured kid-friendly events and local brews for adults. Organizers say this is the first time the zoo hosted Octoberfest. Zoo directors say Zootoberfest is the perfect event that takes place between the end of summer and Boo at the Zoo. Zoo officials say funds from the event will go to ZooMontana's programs.

"A zoo is a really important part of any community," said Troy Paisley, ZooMontana education director. "Just connecting people with animals and that's what we're trying to do, kind of that touch the heart to teach the mind, make those connections and get people to care about wildlife and wild places and really make an impact."

The zoo provides education programs throughout the year. Troy Paisley says he also hopes to expand in the future by adding a high plains exhibit.

Zootoberfest also has a 21 and over event Saturday night.

For one teen, volunteering is more than just work, it's an inspiration. Hannah Halvorson explained how volunteering in her community has impacted her life. "The biggest reward is being able to spend time with people and making their days and always seeing the smiles on their face." Halvorson said.  For the 14-year-old,  her volunteer work helping at nursing homes has made her friends and memories to last, and her hard work hasn't gone unnoticed.
