Man Driving Stolen Ambulance Arrested

HARDIN -

The Big Horn County Sheriff's Office says a man is in custody after crashing a stolen American Medical Response ambulance Saturday night.

Cody Lee Paine led Montana Highway Patrol troopers on a chase, driving at speeds up to 105 miles per hour, from Billings past Hardin. The charges are currently pending.

Officials report the ambulance was taken around 9:45 PM Saturday night. After an hour-long chase, officers from the Big Horn County Sheriff's Office deployed spike strips, which caused Paine to roll the ambulance on the I-90. They are unsure if the car hit the spikes or if Paine swerved to avoid them. An officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs pulled Paine from the vehicle. He had minor injuries from the crash and was treated at the site.

Montana Highway Patrol trooper Toman Baukema says Paine has a valid Texas driver's license and Paine's conditions and possessions indicate he is homeless.
