Benefits of Breastfeeding

BILLINGS, Mont. -

This year's Family Fun Walk raised awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.

The Billings Breastfeeding Coalition held the walk to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, which started on August 1.

The event showed mothers the different kinds of support they can get from the community. The path was lined with different booths representing five circles of support: family and social networks, employment and work, response to crisis situations, legislation and government, and health care systems.

"Breastfeeding really benefits not only the moms and the babies, but the community as a whole because it creates a healthier population and it reduces health care costs and it's just better for everybody," said Elsa Petersson, Riverstone Health's WIC lactation consultant.

To encourage breastfeeding, organizers say support is vital and Billings has those resources.
