New Library Construction Progressing Well

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

It's still a work in progress, but the new Parmly Billings Library is getting closer to completion. It's expected the new facility will be a substantial improvement over the current setup.

"People were very concerned about the environment in the building, just the quality of the space. How it was difficult to clean, the sight lines were not good, people didn't feel safe in it," said the library's director Bill Cochran

After seeking input from families, police, and social service groups, the new library was designed with the concerns and suggestions in mind to create a more open, welcoming, and safe environment.

For example, the children's area will have a narrow entrance right next to a staff desk, so parents can feel safer having their kids read or hang out in the library.

"What they're going to find in this new building is a very welcoming, comfortable, enjoyable space that has lots of natural light, very spacious, long sight lines, all of the amenities that you would expect from a modern public building that weren't able to be retrofit into what had been a hardware warehouse," said Cochran.

Beautiful views of the Rims, a cafe, and large, open spaces are just some of what the new library will have to offer.

"It's just going to be a treat I think for people to be in one of the newest, best, libraries in the country that was designed with so much attention to detail," said Cochran.

Construction will wrap up on the new library in November with a grand opening scheduled for this February.
