Preliminary Colorado Helicopter Crash Report Issued

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report for the helicopter crash, which claimed the life of a Billings pilot, is being released.

Investigators say the helicopter was carrying a load suspended from a cable. The aircraft passed the intended drop site when the cable detached and the load hit the ground. The NTSB says the helicopter then conducted a series of abrupt maneuvers before it crashed.

Last week's crash took the life of AJ Blain, a pilot with Billings Flying Service. The aircraft was in the area on a job for seismic exploration.

The report did not list a cause for the crash.
