Water Safety Tips

The water seems very inviting to many as a place to cool off during this time of year. But lately, more and more people have been drowning in our local lakes and rivers.

Stillwater County Sheriff Clifford Brophy confirmed two deaths related to drowning in the Stillwater River on Friday. He says the river may look peaceful and shallow, but it can be dangerous. The sheriff says practice caution when planning on rafting or swimming in a river.

"Whether you're in the water or in a raft always wear a life vest or personally flotation device. Although they're not required legally, they should be mandatory. For their safety they should wear them at all times," says Brophy.

The sheriff emphasizes against standing up on a raft. And he says to make sure the ropes on your raft are tied securely so you can't get tangled into them and drown.
