Little Wildfire Danger So Far This Year

Posted: Updated:

What a difference one year makes. So far in 2013, there have been no red flag warnings issued for extreme fire danger in south central Montana.

At this point last year, 12 red flag warnings had already been issued and it ended up being one of the worst fire seasons in recent years. But with the great deal of spring rain and downpours out of recent thunderstorms, the area has seen little threat from fires.

"Given the level of greenness that we have, any fires that do develop have remained under control for the most part. We'll just monitor that as we progress through July and into August," said warning coordination meteorologist Tom Frieders with the National Weather Service office in Billings.

From this point through the rest of the summer is the driest time of year across the area. August is when the fire season typically peaks for the region.
