Confirmed: Tornadoes Touched Down During Monday's Storms

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

The National Weather Service confirmed that Monday's batch of severe weather included tornadoes.

One touched down north of Melstone (in eastern Musselshell County) as an EF0, which is the weakest classification. The other was spotted near 12 Mile Dam, located a short distance south of Miles City. That tornado was classified as an EF1, with winds greater than 90 miles per hour. Weather experts say there's a science to classifying each twister.

"Just a difference between basically debris thrown in all one direction or if we get some kind of an indication when you see debris thrown in different directions. That's how we do. We just do kind of our own investigative work after the storm rolls through," said warning coordination meteorologist Tom Frieders with the Billings National Weather Service office.

Three tornadoes hit the Great Falls area last year, but this is the first time south central Montana has seen any tornadoes touch down in nearly two years.

Streets that run for several blocks, without a single street light. It is a dark reality many residents throughout the Magic City face when the sun goes down. Leo Robinson lives on Monad Rd., east of 24th Street. He said if street lights were placed on Monad, safety for everyone would improve. Terry Smith, City Traffic Engineer, said the city is more than willing to work with anyone, on any street, which lacks street lights.
