Smith River State Park Reopens Thursday

BILLINGS -

Smith River State Park, which was closed by the State's Fish, Wildlife, and Parks authorities, will reopen Thursday.

The park, which is near Helena, was closed Friday because of bear activity. FWP officials worked with U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services to remove the bears.

The whole park, with the exception of the Staigmiller Campsite, will reopen. Parks officials are reminding visitors to keep their campsite clean at all times, and use bear-resistant containers.

The Park’s lodging concessionaire, Xanterra, tore out hundreds of old cabins in Canyon Village, and started construction this summer on five new lodges to replace them. The new lodges are actually modular jigsaw puzzles.
