Mosquito Season Nears

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS -

It's getting buggy out there! Rain coupled with the warmer weather is drawing more mosquitoes out and about around Billings.

If you want to "fight the bite" and protect yourself against those pesky critters, especially those who may be carrying the West Nile Virus, be sure to practice the four "D's." According to RiverStone health's Tamalee St. James, those are, wear Deet, avoid going out during dusk and dawn, drain standing water near your home, and dress in long sleeves and pants.

"Another thing to look for now because it does affect animals also. And so we do surveillance here for birds and horses, and animals getting the West Nile because they'll typically show up with it before we have human exposures," says St. James.

Prepare yourself now, because mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus tend to lay their eggs towards the end of summer.

Streets that run for several blocks, without a single street light. It is a dark reality many residents throughout the Magic City face when the sun goes down. Leo Robinson lives on Monad Rd., east of 24th Street. He said if street lights were placed on Monad, safety for everyone would improve. Terry Smith, City Traffic Engineer, said the city is more than willing to work with anyone, on any street, which lacks street lights.
