2012's series of severe weather events across the country might prove to be one of the costliest since 1980.

According to scientists with the National Climatic Data Center, 11 severe weather events across the country caused $110 Billion in damages and losses. The NCDC said super storm Sandy and the year-long drought were the main factors behind the high costs.

The costliest year for weather disasters since 1980 was in 2005, the year when Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of damage to New Orleans. Losses for that year was $160 Billion.
