Heart & Sole Run Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The 34th Annual Heart and Sole Run kicked off Saturday morning featuring a 5k, a 10k, and a 2-mile health walk.

Runners and walkers alike push through the Heart and Sole Race to make it to the finish line. The course winds around the streets of downtown Billings, and ends at Dehler Park. One woman, Dana Birdinground, rounded up nine of her family members to run for their own cause, beating heart disease.

"It's important for us to stay active and eat healthy, so I'm stressing that to my daughters and to my granddaughters," says Birdinground.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S., and it also runs in Dana Birdinground's family.

The 56 year old has been walking the race for seven years, and encouraged her family to hit the pavement. Birdinground hopes to continue the tradition with her family for as long as she can.

"We'll be doing the Heart and Sole for I don't know, as long as there is a heart and sole run I guess," says Birdinground.

Proceeds from the race benefit the YMCA Strong Community Campaign and Bike Net to improve the Billings Trail System.
