Summer Reading Kickoff Block Party

BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Billings Public Library hosts its first ever Summer Reading Kickoff Block Party.

The Library set up face painting, food vendors, and medieval European dress up to encourage kids and their families to participate in a little summer reading. According to Billings Public Library Assistant Director Dee Ann Redman, the library's new bookmobile was showcased as well, with its new solar technology installed, the library on wheels uses the energy from the sun to power the vehicle.

"Kids who don't read during the summer lose ground on their literacy skills and their learning skills and that carries over throughout their educational experience. So if we've got a great way and a fun way to encourage them to keep reading all summer long , then they maintain their skills and maybe even grow a little," says Redman.

Library staff hopes to make the Summer Reading Kickoff Block Party an annual event.
