Corette Power Plant Could Stay Open

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Corette Power Plant may stay open past 2015.

PPL Montana reached an agreement with the state to reduce pollution at the plant if the company decides to stay open.

In Yellowstone County District Court on Monday, PPL Montana agreed to install sulfur dioxide controls at Corette by April of 2015. That's the date the plant was set to be mothballed. Monday's agreement also calls on PPL to pay $250,000 for operating under expired permits. If the company makes the changes, officials predict the visibility in Billings and Colstrip will improve due to reduced pollution.

Rain helped slow the growth of a wild fire near Yellowstone Thursday. The June fire grew from five to 1900 acres Wednesday. A Shoshone National Forest spokeswoman says investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire that started about fifteen miles outside Yellowstone’s East Entrance Tuesday evening. Smoke was visible Wednesday in Cody, nearly forty miles away the next day.
