New Official State Medal of Valor

Posted: Updated:

Montana is now only one of four states to honor its veterans who died or are missing in action with an official state "Medal of Valor."

Governor Steve Bullock signed the law on Thursday. The Montana Award of Valorous Service will be given to the families of about 1,500 Montana servicemen and women. The state will spend the next year trying to identify those families who qualify and will honor them in 2015.

The new law allows for private donations to help fund the medals which cost about $7,000 dollars to make 100 medals.
