War Veterans Honored

BILLINGS -

Three veterans and their families were recognized for their service in the armed forces. A ceremony was held in their honor Friday afternoon.

Senator Jon Tester presented the medals to the families of George H. Ames of Colstrip, Michael A. Merrill, and Norman D. Leonard, the only living veteran in the group.

Leonard served in World War Two and the Korean War and was involved in 11 major battles over that time. He said receiving the medals makes him even more proud to have served.

"It made me tear up. Bringing back memories and to be recognized, it's quite an honor," said Leonard.

Leonard has already traveled to Washington D.C. on the Big Sky Honor Flight to view both war memorials. He was presented with the Korean War Service Medal and a 50-year anniversary of the Korean War Citation.
