WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Third-seeded Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) and No. 12 seed Tomas Berdych (BUR'-dich) are playing the first men's semifinal of the day at Wimbledon. Berdych won the opening two sets 6-3, 7-6. Today's second match on Centre Court has second seed Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL') facing fourth-seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Diamondbacks have fired manager A.J. Hinch, whose team was 34 games under .500 in his less than one full season on the job, and replaced him on an interim basis with bench coach Kirk Gibson. Arizona also canned general manager Josh Byrnes, who was so coveted three years ago that the Diamondbacks gave him a whopping eight-year contract extension.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After just one relaxing week at home in Montana, Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson decided he can handle another season of the NBA grind. The two-time defending champions locked up their most important free agent of the summer when Jackson announced he'll return next season, putting off retirement for at least another year to chase his 12th NBA title.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) — The second round of the PGA's AT&T National got under way this morning with a crowded leaderboard. Arjun Atwal, Joe Ogilvie, Jason Day and Nick Watney shared a one-shot lead over six other golfers. Tiger Woods began day two at his tournament seven shots off the pace after opening with a 3-over 73.

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP) — Netherlands and five-time champion Brazil are playing a World Cup quarterfinal today in South Africa (10 a.m. Eastern). The series stands 3-2-and-4 in favor of the South Americans, and Brazil has won two of three World Cup meetings, including a shootout in the 1998 semifinals.
