BILLINGS - After 20 years of waiting the Billings Central Girls have their fifth state championship. Players and coaches alike said they knew had 'it' from day one.

"I knew it the very first practice," said Shae Chilton, "it was a different attitude." "The very first game," said Maggie Powell, "well, even before that."

"I knew I had something special on June 4th, when I signed my contract," Coach Jeff Malby said after leading his lady rams to the state championship in his very first year with the program.

It's the seventh overall championship of the year for the Rams, and the coach knew expectations would be high. "At first you put a little pressure on yourself," he said, "but once you realize that those kids who won state championships are playing for you, they've already been there done that."

"Everyone thinks they can do it," said Senior Guard Chilton, "but once you get there it's an unbelievable feeling."

Fellow Senior Guard Austin Hanser agreed, "It's unreal I am still a little shocked." "I'm sure my arm's going to be pretty sore," she added, "I start softball today."

Shae Chilton, the team's shooting guard, tore her ACL before the big game. But as banged up as they may be, these girls say it's about heart. "We're not very big here," said Powell, "we're all relatively small." Chilton said they make up for that though with effort, "I think we played harder, we had more heart that game."

"They became a true team," said Malby, "true teams are rare."

When the Central Girls squared off with Sidney, history wasn't on their side having lost all three of this year's previous matchups. But the ball bounced the Ram's way Saturday, as they knocked the Eagles off their perch, 50-42.

"It kind of made the revenge even sweeter," said Powell. Luck that needs to continue if they want to get championship number 6 next year. The Rams finished the season 18-6.
