YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING - An annual survey of the northern Yellowstone elk herd shows the population holding fairly steady compared to recent years.

Numbers are still down by about a third from 2005, however, and down about 60 percent since wolves were reintroduced in the region in the mid-1990s.

Yellowstone officials say biologists counted at least 6,000 elk during this winter's aerial survey. About 7,100 elk were counted last year, but park officials say lack of snow on the ground and poor flying weather hampered the survey this year.

Roughly 6,300 and 6,700 elk were counted in 2007 and 2008, down significantly from about 9,500 elk counted in 2005.
