SHERIDAN, WYOMING - The city of Sheridan is laying off eight full-time employees and two part-time workers and reducing the hours of an additional four employees.

Sheridan Human Resources Director Heather Doke says no more layoffs are expected. The city initially attempted to reduce its work force through voluntary buyouts offered to all city employees last week. But only five employees took advantage of the buyout option.

Officials have attributed the need for staff reductions to a $1.3 million budget gap the city faces in the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Doke says that the layoffs and buyouts will save the city about $800,000 per year in personnel costs. The remainder of the $1.3 million gap is being addressed through non-personnel cuts.
