Potential oil play in Wyoming excites industry

CASPER, WYOMING - There's some optimism of a revival in Wyoming's oil and gas industry thanks to a potential oil boom in the eastern part of the state.

There's encouragement that new drilling techniques will open up vast amounts of oil and natural gas that had been unrecoverable. And with national oil prices expected to average more than $80 per barrel through 2010, there's a rush on mineral leasing from Cheyenne to north of Douglas.

Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission supervisor Tom Doll says places like Goshen and Platte counties could see some significant drilling activity for the first time in decades. Much of the mineral leasing activity in eastern Wyoming is targeting private mineral estate, which means operators can avoid lengthy environmental permitting requirements.
