MOOSE, WYOMING - Grand Teton National Park has temporarily closed off an area near Antelope Flats Road to protect a sage grouse mating area.

A quarter-mile radius all around the mating area, or lek, will be closed from this week until May 15.

Park officials say sage grouse are very sensitive to human disturbance. They say human activity near a lek can trigger birds to flush or leave the area.

They say violation of the closure area may result in a citation.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service earlier this month announced that sage grouse are warranted for endangered species protection but precluded from listing by species that are higher priorities for protection.
