CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Federal regulators have released a draft environmental impact statement analyzing a proposed coal lease in northern Campbell County.

Kiewit Mining Group Inc. has applied for the 54-million-tons lease next to its Buckskin mine north of Gillette. The mine produced about 26 million tons in 2009 and directly employed more than 300 miners.

The proposed lease is known as Buckskin Mine Hay Creek II.

The Bureau of Land Management will hold a public hearing on the proposal on April 22 in Gillette. The purpose of the hearing is to receive public comments on the proposed coal lease and its fair market value.

The deadline for public comments is May 12.
