Cheyenne baseball field lease comes under scrutiny

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - The director of Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources says a lease agreement the city of Cheyenne has with a local baseball program giving the program rights to control a $3 million ball field in exchange for $1 a year is not in compliance with terms of a federal grant used to build the field.

Milward Simpson says the grant application the city put forward to build Powers Field said there would be broad access to the general public and various baseball programs.

However, the lease the city has with American Legion Post 6 allows the club to control who has access. Other teams in the city say Post 6 shuts them out from the high-quality playing field by charging too much. Besides the federal grant, a fundraising campaign and taxpayers helped pay for the ball field.
