CHEYENNE, WYOMING - An audit of a program intended to improve the reading skills of struggling first- and second-graders has found that inconsistent reporting and other problems are making it difficult for the program to meet goals.

The audit released last month found that problems with assessment methods and student tracking are hindering the Reading Assessment and Intervention Program from attaining goals set by state law.

The Legislature's Management Audit Committee in July asked for an audit of the program that sets a goal of having 85% of first- and second-graders with specific reading problems to become proficient.

State Department of Education officials say they have created a task force to fix the problems in the program.
