ROCK SPRINGS, WYOMING - State-contracted engineers will resume drilling in Rock Springs to investigate underground shifting that has damaged some homes.

The goal of the work is to help determine the exact cause of the underground movement and what mitigation measures are required to stop it. Engineers have been working for several years to determine what's going on under the old mine workings, tunnels and voids scattered beneath one particular neighborhood that has seen problems with shifting ground.

Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands administrator Rick Chancellor says the work is expected to continue throughout the summer and fall. Some homeowners blame damage to their homes on a project in 2007 where heavy weights were dropped in an effort to collapse underground mining voids.
