CHEYENNE, WYOMING - State Superintendent Jim McBride says technical problems almost caused him to "pull the plug" on the statewide standardized test, but he has decided to see through this year's online assessment.

Students began taking the Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students, or PAWS test, Monday. Grades 3-8 and 11 must take the test.

Many students have experienced long delays and getting kicked offline. McBride said Wednesday he considered but decided against ditching the online test in favor of a pencil-and-paper format.

A spokesman for NCS Pearson, Inc., which developed the test software, says most school districts reporting problems now say the system is working better. McBride says the Department of Education will seek damages against Pearson.
