RAWLINS, WYOMING - The Sinclair Wyoming Refining Company says two sulfur dioxide releases last year were because of careless operation.

The company detailed the incidents in documents submitted to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality's air quality division.

According to the documents, a flare at the refinery released an estimated 5.1 tons of sulfur dioxide on May 31 after a valve was left open. Another sulfur dioxide release occurred Dec. 8 after a boiler house supervisor blocked in a boiler feed water line to prevent a water header from freezing.

Sulfur dioxide is a heavy, toxic gas.
