Wyoming House committee takes up tougher DUI law

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - State lawmakers looking at overhauling Wyoming's drinking and driving law are debating the penalty drivers should face when they don't submit to a breathalyzer test.

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday began discussing a bill that would toughen Wyoming's DUI law. The committee didn't act on the legislation and plans to resume discussion Tuesday. Right now, people who refuse a breathalyzer test can have their driver's licenses suspended for six months.

The bill would change that to up to six months in jail and a fine up to $750, same as the penalty for a first-time DUI conviction. Law enforcement officials say they support a tougher law but some committee members say they object to tough penalties for not agreeing to be tested.
