CHEYENNE, WYOMING - A Northern Arapaho man has pleaded guilty in tribal court to killing a bald eagle in 2005 for use in his tribe's Sun Dance.

Winslow Friday entered the plea Tuesday on the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming. His public defender says Friday was fined $2,500 and lost his hunting privileges on the reservation for a year.

Friday has acknowledged for years that he shot the eagle without a permit. But the question of whether he should be prosecuted prompted a protracted legal fight and attracted national attention in Native American religious circles.

Friday had faced up to a year in jail and a possible $100,000 fine in federal court in Wyoming. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Cheyenne agreed this year to transfer Friday's case to the Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Court.
