Wyoming environmental group rethinks ferret petition

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - An environmental group says it might not have petitioned to give the black-footed ferret more protection had it known about Wyoming's plans to reintroduce the rare animal.

Last month, two landowners in southern Albany County withdrew from a deal with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to reintroduce the ferret on their land. The move came after Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and other environmental groups petitioned to have ferrets living on public lands receive full federal endangered species protection.

State officials say the unidentified landowners feared that the petition would eventually result in government restrictions imposed on their private land. Duane Short of the conservation alliance says his organization didn't know about the reintroduction plans. State Game and Fish officials dispute that.
