LARAMIE, WYOMING - The Wyoming Department of Corrections is hosting a seminar for law enforcement officers about emerging trends of prescription drug abuse and illegal trafficking.

Organizers say participants in the Thursday seminar in Laramie will include Laramie police, state corrections officers and probation officers from Albany, Fremont, Goshen, Laramie and Washakie counties.

Employees of pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma will train officers on topics like drug identification and lawful prescribing. The state Department of Health reported this summer that Wyoming deaths linked to prescription drug abuse more than doubled from 2005 to 2008 and far outpaced deaths caused by cocaine or heroin use.
