Disease turns up in new hunt area near 10 Sleep

CODY, WYOMING - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says chronic wasting disease has been found in another deer hunt area in the Big Horn Basin.

Chronic wasting is a neurological disease that's deadly to deer, elk and moose. Game and Fish has been asking hunters to submit samples from their animals to find out whether those animals have the disease.

Chronic wasting disease turned up in a mule deer buck killed Oct. 15 in the Spring Creek drainage southeast of Ten Sleep. Previous cases of chronic wasting were confirmed just to the east and west.

The game department says major health organizations have said the risk of humans contracting disease from infected wildlife appears to be low. However, they say people shouldn't eat animals that look sick or that test positive for chronic wasting disease.
