Wyoming lawmakers say scholarships won't keep pace

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Some key Wyoming legislators say the Hathaway Scholarship Fund won't stretch as far as it does now if a tuition hike is approved for the University of Wyoming.

Sen. Phil Nicholas, R-Laramie, says the dollar amount set by the Legislature for students receiving the state scholarships isn't based on tuition. Honors students get $1,600 per semester, and other students are awarded $1,200 or $800 per semester. Sen. Mike Massie, D-Laramie, says the highest award won't leave enough after books and tuition for students to cover living expenses, and the lowest award won't cover tuition and books.

The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees is considering three possible tuition increases during its meeting this month. The proposals suggest hikes of 5%, 7.5% or 9.9% each year through 2014.
