CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Gov. Dave Freudenthal has asked the White House to name Casper Police Chief Tom Pagel to serve as U.S. Marshal for Wyoming.

Freudenthal earlier had suggested Kurt Dobbs, a former director of the state's Division of Criminal Investigation, for the marshal's job. Dobbs withdrew his name from consideration this summer.

Dobbs pulled out after the state learned that the White House says marshals should have college degrees. Dobbs says he has some college credits but hasn't received a degree. Freudenthal's office says the White House hasn't taken final action on any of the governor's recent nominations for federal posts.

Among the pending vacancies are a federal judgeship in the state. Freudenthal recommended his wife and two others for the position.
